Parents and Carers
Supporting you to understand and support your young person
Parenting or caring for a neurodivergent young person can bring moments of connection, joy and pride — and times when it can be difficult to know what your young person needs or how best to help.
You may be trying to make sense of anxiety, overwhelm, shutdowns, big reactions, school difficulties, burnout or changes in your relationship. Sometimes you've already tried many things and are left wondering what to do next.
Parent and carer support offers a space to slow things down, step back from the immediate problem and become curious about what might be happening underneath.
What we might explore
Depending on your family's needs, sessions might focus on:
Understanding your young person's neurodivergence and individual needs
Making sense of behaviour, overwhelm and emotional responses
Supporting regulation without relying on compliance
Masking, burnout and capacity
School difficulties and transitions
Communication and connection
Navigating increasing independence
Responding to anxiety or distress
Understanding your own responses as a parent or carer
Finding approaches that feel sustainable for your family
The aim isn't to create the "perfect" parenting strategy. It's to develop a better understanding of your young person and find ways of responding that respect both their needs and yours.
Your young person doesn't need to be my client
Parent and carer support is available as a service in its own right. Your child or young person does not need to attend therapy with me for you to access support.
Where I am also working therapeutically with your young person, we can discuss how parent or carer involvement can support the work while respecting their privacy, autonomy and developing independence.
Not sure where to start?
You don't need to know exactly what kind of support you need before getting in touch. Tell me a little about what's happening for your family and we can consider together whether parent and carer support might be helpful.
